War on Drugs (JunkPhood Issue #2 cover)

This issue addresses the drug war from college professors and
activists points of view. Contains interviews with professors and
activists from all around the US on the drug war.

Junkphood Magazine was a zine I created out of the Drop In
Center in Santa Cruz, CA. It was a zine for at-risk drug
users...mostly street kids and heavy drug users that would
benefit from HIV and Hep C prevention information. It included
poetry, artwork, and interviews along with public health info.
Junkphood ran with the propaganda, pop culture, and pin-up
girl themes, as a means to get young kids to care about their
health and to have a voice, although they were coming from a
"junkie" perspective.

Although I don't work with this particular group of people
anymore, I believe there's a huge need for more literature and
media like this in the public health arena, specially when it
comes to drug related public health concerns. Kids are dying
out there(overdose prevention was another issue we
addressed), they are destroying their lives and those of others
around them, simply because they don't have the information
they need in order to survive their own addictions in one
piece!!! I believe it would be way worth society's money and time
to address all the problems that America's drug addicts face
and to come up with media that actually works and gets their
attention!!!

Unfortunately, we had very little funding to keep going with
these zines and other media.

Peace
