Manali Refugee Camp, India
Living Room

This is one photograph from a series that I shot for the Central
Tibetan Secretariat’s Department of Home Affairs. My assignment was
to photograph the living conditions of two of the refugee camps in the
Kulu-Manali area.

This is another photo of an elder Tibetan lady in her home. When I
shot this series I was still fresh in India and every day was had an
impact on me. If I could go back in time, I would like to have known
more about this person and the others I photographed at the camps. I
moved around from one place to another. The people at the camps,
including the children, seemed less bright than those in the more
settled communities. Obviously they had it harder.

In this photograph, if you look real carefully at the bottom right of the
print, you can just see the head of a rooster who was roaming around
freely. It shows a little better in the actual print. Perhaps he was
checking this strange visitor (me) out.
