Saint Peter
How mixed are the symbols of Christianity. Perhaps only in the first few years did the cross mean "criminal" of the most despicable kind. Treason, claiming one is king, in any empire is enough to merit such a death. But to bring it to the present perhaps a noose is a better symbol, easier to recognize in its intent now that the crosses contradiction of meaning has faded to worshipful sacrifice.
Yet along with the enforcement of western beliefs came an opposition movement who would coop St. Peter, and use his cross as their own. "Satanism" is the first thing that most people say when they first see this crucifix. It seems that even Christian folk have trouble recognizing their own most sacred symbols without casting each other into blasphemy. It's just a symbol.
Usually, at a show opening, this piece is a live installation, and guests are invited to help hammer in the nails of Saint Peter. Some are enthusiastic, some skiddish, and others cannot participate because of some taboo they may be breaking, some blasphemy they may be falling in collusion with. Decisions like these are hard when one is second guessing a deity, or priest
