Saint Valentine
Many of our favorite traditions rely on an uninformed and romantic notion of things, as we construct a world based on pleasant ideas that sit in contradiction to the facts. Saint Valentine led a harsh life by most accounts, and yet chololate and roses seem to be his legacy.
In this interactive altarpiece we see the noble saint welcoming before us. Yet there is a small door in his chest with a little handle. Opening the door, we find a vivid color photograph of a real heart mid-transplant.
How many of our ideas of life are like those paper hearts, floating disconnected from reality, symbolic to some purpose and yet avoiding other meanings and origins? How can we open up that little door and experience the pleasure of finding things out that goes beyond confirming the comfortable?
